If you haven't heard of the NoDa Brewing Run Club you are missing out. Founded just over a year ago, this brilliant idea involves running and beer, two of Charlotte's favorite pastimes. The club meets every Wednesday night at 6:30 in the Brewery parking lot and takes off for either a 1, 3, or 5 mile run through the streets of The Arts District. I had the opportunity to interview the mind behind the party.
Title: Director of Community Optimism @ NoDa Brewing Company
Favorite NoDa Brewery Beer: Hop Drop and Roll (West Coast IPA)
"I like running because I've gotten to know my city more. Now I know where restaurants, breweries, and roads are. I love that local feel."
What neighborhood do you live in? I'm in NoDa off of Shamrock near the original Pike's Pharmacy.
Tell me about your background. I started at a community college in Maryland, where I'm from. After a couple of years I transferred to UNCC - Started in Architecture, moved to Art, moved to Computer Science, finished in Marketing. 4 majors and 2 colleges later, I finally figured out what I want to do with my life (for now).
Where do you buy most of your running gear? Most of my shirts are either given to me by people who come to run club or from races. As far as shoes, I try to keep run club non-biased, so I go everywhere. Try Sports, Charlotte Running Company, and Run for Your Life.
What are some races you have done? A lot at the White Water Center. We are the beer sponsor out there. Trail Half Marathon (which was my first half). I like to run a lot, but I'm not a good runner. I drink afterwards and I don't know how to stretch and I don't know what to eat. I just like to run! The Tuna Run in Raleigh was one of my favorites. I am hoping to do Thunder Road this year.
Here is one of Brian's favorite running routes:
What do you do on weekends? Hang out with friends, go to local bars, Sunday Funday, White Water Center, Day trips to Asheville, Charleston, Wilmington, Raleigh to go to other breweries, go to the beach, and hiking.
What is the purpose of NoDa Brewing Run Club? It is great to see beer loving friends getting into running and my running friends start to appreciate craft beer. I love it when a friend comes up to me and says 'Hey Brian, I just ran my first 5k' or when a friend who would have had a Mich Ultra after a race now looks for NoDa or another local brew. I love seeing both great communities blend together and support local to the nth degree.
What are some personal and Brewery goals for the future? Continue to grow the Run Club, but not hit that limit. I want to keep the original crew. I'd love to see NoDa be the NC Brewery Powerhouse. We are already at the Panthers Stadium, the airport, and in SC. But, our vision here at the brewery is to keep true to our roots. Support the backyard first, then we will grow out. If neighbors aren't helped first then there's no reason to expand. Personally, I hope to run a marathon by the end of the year.
